As a career librarian, I’ve progressed from encyclopedias, card catalogs, hardbound multi-volume indexes and microfilm through dial-up connections and curly thermal printouts, Netscape and FTP, to the internet and the cloud. (Not Twitter. I drew the line at Twitter.) I’ve had to fly by the seat of my pants, scratching out enough to keep my job.
Recently I heard a social sciences researcher complain about the misuse of the expression “steep learning curve.” He explained that if the X-axis represents time, and the Y-axis represents expertise, then a very difficult task that takes a long time to master is actually an extremely *shallow* learning curve.
I will be standing in the small puddle of this website for some time. Shallow, cold, and probably full of slime and algae. Maybe even leeches. Bear with me.
